Glass and acrylic or plastic skylights are available. Tubular skylights are relatively new on the scene. The small size allows them it to be used in spaces where full-sized skylights cannot. Hallways bathrooms even closets can accommodate a tubular skylight. They provide a lot of light in spite of their small size. The concept and installation process are basically the same as for a regular skylight except they have an enclosed tunnel of reflective material to reflect the light. They are available in many sizes. The small ones are 10 to 12 inch diameter and the large ones are 24 inches. Flat glass skylights come mounted in a wood or integrated rubber and metal framework and require no additional curb construction.
There must be a clear opening in the area where the skylight is to be placed. A skylight that faces the East lets in plenty of morning sunshine while one that faces the West brings lets in the afternoon sunshine. It is important to know the amount of light and the type of light your skylight lets in. Afternoon sunlight can become uncomfortably hot if you live in a warm and dry place. The size of the room also has a bearing on the effectiveness of the skylight on your roof. If the room is small your choices are severely limited as skylights are best suited for large rooms. If you still want a skylight for a small room it is best to opt for an elegant pyramid skylight. This gives the illusion of space.
Your ventilating skylight can be operated by one of three ways: Manual skylight controls - These are opened by your use of an extended rod to manually crank the skylight open. These are designed for ceilings of less than 15 feet. Electronic skylight controls - A simpler model of this type of control is wired to a wall mounted switch which opens and closes the skylight. More complex models are controlled by a special wall console of a wireless remote control. Automatic operating controls - With this type of control integrated heat sensors trigger the skylight to open when the interior heat reaches a preset temperature. Exterior sensors automatically close the unit when they sense moisture.
