Tubular skylights An alternative to the conventional skylight which looks like a window in your roof is the tubular skylight. The tubular skylight is a roof-mounted dome which collects natural light and delivers it to the room below. It is less expensive than the conventional skylight because it is designed to fit between roof and ceiling framing eliminating the need for structural modifications. You will commonly see these used in bathrooms hallways and closets but they can be used in any room of your house. The average tubular skylight ranges in size from 10 - 21 inches in diameter which lights a 100-600 square foot interior space.
Typically flat glass skylights include all the installation materials and they are among the easiest to install. Moreover because they are glass these flat skylights are less likely to scratch. Domed acrylic skylights are among the most affordable especially compared to glass alternatives. These skylights are available in a variety of tints making them an attractive addition to any home or room. Unfortunately domed acrylic skylights do not offer the same noise protection as glass varieties and they tend to be more susceptible to leaking. Function Now that you know a little bit about the types of skylights available you should take some time to consider their function.
If installed badly however they can do a great deal of damage. Many people dont realize how easily that damage can be avoided by purchasing a replacement skylight instead of giving it up altogether. A skylight might be detrimental to a house in many different ways. They require flashing when installed and without proper flashing of aluminum or some other sturdy material the light will leak. Rain and other forms of moist weather will find its way into the house itself. Roof design is very important when choosing and installing a skylight. It is another reason why skylights fail after awhile. The angle or tilt of a roof and the angle at which the skylight is set will determine how strong and supported the light is.
It is recommended that the skylight size should never be more than five percent of the floor area in rooms with many windows and not more than fifteen percent of the rooms total floor area for spaces with very few windows. Skylights on north-facing roofs provide cool illumination while east-facing roofs provide maximum light and heat in the morning. West-facing skylights provide afternoon sunlight and heat. South-facing skylights provide more passive solar heat than any other location. Skylights are an excellent way to bring more natural light into your home. Just one skylight can dramatically transform your room by adding 30% more natural light than a window. This helps you save energy and makes your home warmer during the winter.
