The structure of the house is another deciding factor. If there are beams pillars or pipes in the way the skylight on the roof may not get the right amount of visibility. Making structural changes is not an affordable option in most cases. So it is better to evaluate the room before you place skylights on the roof. In most cases skylights should be built into the house at the time of drawing the design of the house. In case skylights are introduced at a later point of time care must be taken to ensure that they are placed correctly and installed properly. Skylights are overhead windows often in a roof that allow sunlight to filter inside any enclosed area; they are a great natural light option to artificial lighting solutions during the daytime.
Skylights are best suited to catch sunlight from the overhanging clouds. In addition to this skylight windows allow a deeper penetration of the suns light into the structure of the house in such a way that it is less obtrusive. Skylights also keep heating and cooling costs down. Skylights are your windows to the heaven. They can breathe drama into any living space. And they are all the rage these days. In such a scenario it is easy for people to forget important considerations while choosing skylights. Energy problems that influence windows operate just as strongly or even more so in skylights. For instance heat loss heat gains solar gains ventilation and water pooling affect skylight windows too.
If the room you intend to illuminate with the skylight has an open ceiling with no attic space above you can install the skylight without needing to construct a light shaft. This is by far the simplest installation and it offers the maximum amount of light and a view of the sky. For ceilings with an attic space above a light shaft must be constructed that connects the skylight to the room. Skylight shafts take one of three forms: Straight in which the shaft drops vertically from the roof to the ceiling and is the same dimension as the skylight itself. This type is the easiest to construct but because of its offset angle relative to the skylight offers the least amount of light.
