Skylight windows are a wonderful addition to a home. Theres no doubt about it. But a lot depends on where exactly the house is located. Skylight windows are best suited for cool climates where the rays of the sun are not very harsh. Fortunately many places in the US have just this kind of weather. When used in such places skylight windows become the most important source of solar heating. And even when the sun is wobbly and there is little sunshine entering the room large skylight windows make the room look airy and bright dispelling the gloom. In areas where there is limited light and heat vertical windows are less efficient than large skylights because vertical sunlight is scant.
For instance flat roofs are more susceptible to drainage problems. Flat skylights on flat roofs may lead to water pooling. That is why experts recommend the use of domed skylights on flat roofs. This promotes drainage. Skylights for low pitch installation generally have significant slope built into the design. Attention must be paid to such things before installing skylights. Skylights are introduced into the design and architecture of the home to bring in lots of light heat and warmth. But what happens if there is a tall tree towering over the skylight on the roof? The very purpose of the skylight is defeated. The position of the skylight on the roof plays a vital role in determining its usefulness and effectiveness.
Angled where the shaft is parallel to the pitch of the skylight. It too is the same dimension as the skylight but its straight-in angle offers more light than a straight shaft. Angled shafts also are used to connect two locations that cannot otherwise be aligned. This occurs when the skylight must be installed in a particular spot - between two trusses for example - and the shaft opening is likewise limited to a particular location on the ceiling that is not directly under the skylight. Splayed or pyramid in which the ceiling opening is larger than the skylight opening in width length or both. This type although a little harder to construct is the most popular simply because it allows a smaller skylight to illuminate a larger area.
